Size: The size indicated refers to the plate
size. With diptychs or triptychs the
individual and overall plate size is given
also.
The etchings are all printed on high-
quality heavy-weight rag paper - mostly
Reeves BFK. The print margins vary from two
to five inches. The framed sizes are
significantly larger than the plate or image
size given. On the lower right-hand corner a
chop mark is embossed into the print to
indicate that the artist also prints his
editions. The sign is derived from the
Sievert family crest.
Single trees, often old and
in beautiful locations are the subjects of
many of his intaglio prints. Ancient tree
species such as Giant Sequoia, Redwood,
Juniper, Bristlecone Pine, and various Oaks
have drawn him repeatedly. They inspire him
with their sense of timelessness amid
changes endured over centuries.
Trees have inspired and surrounded Sievert
since his childhood days. He spent every
available moment of his early years roaming
and playing in the forest near his home in
Detmold, Germany. His botanical art has
illustrated numerous nature-related
publications.
The artist's favorite national park is
Yosemite. Numerous plates reflect his
explorations in this spectacular national
treasure.
The beauty of the Sierra
Nevada mountains seen on a summer visit
compelled Sievert to leave his homeland,
Germany, and become a free-lance artist in
San Francisco. Backpacking trips into the
High Sierra wilderness became the
inspiration for his etchings. The borders of
some images depicting topographical maps are
testimony to these adventures.
Animals and humorous pieces reflect
Sievert's other interests and experiences.
